Data engineers use these sets of equipment and software to interpret large sets of data. They also suggest and implement solutions to a company’s problems. These solutions often need to be planned and executed quickly. Because of this, data engineers need to be quick decision-makers.

Duties and Responsibilities of Big Data Engineer Jobs

On any given day, big data engineers are required to complete a variety of duties and responsibilities.  Collecting and organizing sets of raw data is one main task they perform. Monitoring data processing equipment and software and loading data into these processors is another major function of a big data engineer job. They analyze data sets, fix and maintain data hardware and software, and work closely with a team of data scientists.

Qualifications and Requirements for of Big Data Engineer Jobs

Most big data engineers possess a bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, or other related fields. However, education is not the only factor that those looking for a career as a big data engineer will want to obtain. Big data engineers are also experts using several computer programming languages, machine learning concepts, and big data platforms.

Qualifications and requirements that big data engineers should have include knowledge of various coding languages such as Python and Java. They should understand machine learning concepts and data cleaning procedures. Finally, the ability to solve data problems is an essential skill of a big data engineer. 

Experience with Java, Hive, Spark, Python, and SQL, to name a few, is essential. Tool-specific certifications are also necessary. These certifications could include Google’s Cloud Data Certification or IBM’s Certified Data Engineer credentials. 

Understanding databases, learning automation, and becoming proficient at programming are all stepping stones to a career as a big data engineer. To succeed as a data engineer, you need technical skills and you need to keep those technical skills sharp.

Job Outlook

The need for big data engineers is growing every month. Data engineers are the reason that the septillions of gigabytes of data that are used each day aren’t considered useless.  Over the past few years, the overall profession of data engineering has increased dramatically.

This demand is also expected to continue to increase. If this increase does continue, big data engineers would be one of the most in-demand jobs of the next 10 years. On average, big data engineers earn a salary of $130,000 per year, making this a higher than average paying career.
