How to Make Your Business More Social

Lewis Robinson Nov 20, 2019
Social media has exploded in recent years. It’s not just individuals staying in contact with friends and family anymore. Today, businesses are using social media platforms to promote their products or services, connect with their customers, and reach new markets that might have previously been unreachable. Here are a few tips to help your business.

Get on Multiple Platforms

There are several social media platforms. There’s a good chance that your customers are on more than one. You should be, too. This doesn’t mean that you need to be on every platform, though. Choose the ones that make the most sense for your business. You want to be where your customers are.
Think about your customers as well as your business to determine where you should create a presence. No matter what platforms you use, try to use the same handle for each one to make it easier for people to remember.

Set Clear Goals

Getting on social media is great, but you need to have a goal in mind. Before you start posting, identify your marketing goals. You might want to use social media to provide better customer service, generate leads, or build your brand awareness.
Perhaps you want to use social media as an additional way to provide a sales proposal for your customers. Make sure you determine a clear goal before you start posting content on any social media platform.

Update Regularly

It’s not enough to just have an account on social media. To have any impact, you need to be active on your chosen platforms. People who find your page and then discover that you haven’t updated in several weeks aren’t likely to follow you.
Additionally, regular content means that you’re appearing in your followers’ timelines, giving them more opportunities to navigate to your page (and possibly your website).
Consider your posts carefully. Make them engaging. Ask questions or ask for input. Create visual content that will grab the attention of those scrolling by. Video content also gives you a way to say more without taking up a significant amount of space.

Avoid Over-Promoting

Be active on social media, but you need to avoid over-promoting. Many businesses treat social media just like advertising. Overtly promoting in every single post can quickly turn people off and cost you followers (as well as business!). It’s okay to promote yourself every once in a while.
After all, you want your followers to see your products or services. You want them to remember that you’re a business. For every blatantly promotional post, post several content posts. Share an interesting article that you think has something valuable to offer your followers. Ask a question.
Show off your customers. You don’t have to avoid mentioning your business altogether in these posts, but just make sure that you’re not trying to sell yourself too hard in every single one.

Connect with Your Followers

Social media was developed to help people connect. Your business can use social media as a way to connect with your customers. Ask questions of your followers or ask for their input. Read the comments and reply. Social media also gives your followers an additional way to contact you.
If your followers send you a private message, be sure to reply. Treat followers on social media just as you would treat a customer on your website or in your store. Get back to the follower promptly with the information that they need. Remember, customer service is an essential part of running your business.
Treating your social media followers just like customers can help you to gain their trust and turn those followers into loyal customers. Making your business more social gives you the ability to build your customer base.
You can turn current patrons into loyal, repeat customers and find new customers you might have never been able to reach before. Take the time to create valuable content for your social media pages, post regularly, and don’t forget to interact with your followers.
